Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Secondary Education
The MAT program is an online alternative certification and masters program, which
prepares mid-career changers, or recent graduates who have earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree
in a content area outside the field of education to fulfill their dream of becoming
a teacher.听 The program also collaborates and partners with K-12 districts throughout
the state to supply them with highly qualified, certified teachers in high-need areas.

Concentrations
There are eight concentrations offered in Grades 6-12:
- Social Studies
- General Sciences
- English
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Math
- Spanish
听
Dual Certification is available with the Secondary Inclusive program:
- 听Mild/Moderate Special Education in Grades 6-12.
听
Admission Criteria:
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher (or a GPA of 3.0 or higher on the last 60 hours
of undergraduate coursework) on a 4.0 scale will qualify for听regular admission听status.
Undergraduate GPA of 2.5 - 2.74 (or a GPA of 2.75 - 2.9 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate
coursework) on a 4.0 scale will qualify for听conditional admission听status.听听
- Apply to the 不良研究所 Graduate School.
- Pass required PRAXIS content exams. It is recommended that you verify your PRAXIS
test code with a member of the MAT Program staff first. Visit to register.听
- Complete at least 20 hours of classroom observation and submit a log and a written
narrative of your observations.听 If you can provide verification of teaching experience,
or experience as an aid or substitute, this requirement can be waived.

Program Structure:
- 36-42 hours of graduate coursework for certification in Secondary Education (Grades
6-12) - or - Secondary Education/Special Ed. Inclusive (Grades 6-12)听
- One-year paid internship (fall semester and spring semester consecutively) - Summer I Term: Online summer institute with face-to-face field experience component
and Summer II Term: 9-hour course block听
- Program admission is open spring, summer, and fall terms
听
