不良研究所鈥檚 Speech-Language Pathology to co-sponsor annual conference March 18-19

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, in conjunction with the Louisiana Speech-Language-Hearing Association, is a proud co-sponsor of the 22nd Annual Speech-Language Pathology Spring Conference March 18-19.

The conference, which begins at 1:30 p.m. Thursday and ends at 3:15 p.m. Friday, is at the 不良研究所 Student Union Ballroom. Participants from around the state and region are expected to attend.

The conference speaker, J. Scott Yaruss, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, has researched the development of stuttering in young children, and has extensive experience working with children and adults who stutter in a wide variety of clinical settings. He frequently presents continuing education workshops to help speech-language pathologists feel more confident in their ability to help preschool and school age children who stutter.

Many professionals have expressed doubts about their ability to help school-age children who stutter, according to Speech-Language Pathology Department Head and Assistant Professor Johanna Boult.

Boult said the conference workshops will help clinicians find real-world, practical answers to many questions that SLPs may have about treating their patients, including eligibility and dismissal criteria, overall treatment goals and techniques for improving speech fluency, ways to improve children鈥檚 communication attitudes, strategies for working with parents and teachers, how to minimize teasing and bullying, and whether children can benefit from fluency devices or medications are common.5

Dr. Yaruss is associate professor and director of the master鈥檚 degree program in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Pittsburg, associate director of audiology and SLP at Children鈥檚 Hospital of Pittsburgh, and co-director of the Stuttering Center of Western Pennsylvania.
