Public invited to Kinesiology Department’s Single-Parent Fitness Program April 25
On Saturday, April 25, the University of Louisiana at Monroe Kinesiology Department will hold a Single-Parent Fitness Program for families throughout the area, occurring from 9-10:40 a.m. in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. There is no charge to attend.
The program is designed for single-parent families containing children 10 years of age or younger, but the information and resources apply to families of every kind and are intended to engage the entire family in fitness-related activities in the home and throughout the community.
The morning is divided into three 35-minute segments:
• Break It Down: Your family's guide to really understanding the Food Pyramid Guide
• Your Family's Fitness Report Card (free basic fitness profile; valued at $50)
• Fitting in Fitness: Learn ways to easily add more fitness activities into your family's busy schedule
The program begins at 9 a.m. on the lower level of Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Attendees should dress comfortably, but not expect to be physically active unless they choose to be during the Fitting in Fitness session.
The Your Family's Fitness Report Card testing session is optional, but open to every parent and all the children. Individuals will also learn how to do some basic measurements at home to help monitor each child's fitness level.
Mark Doherty, department head of kinesiology, pointed out that “Summer is a great time to be active, but it's also a time that research has shown children actually gain weight because they're not regularly active, such as when they're participating in school physical education or on a school-related sports team.”Interested persons unable to make it to the program may find the related material online at: .
