Greeks shine at Student Affairs Awards Night
The 不良研究所 Office of Greek Life held its annual Athenian Awards banquet April 30 in conjunction with the Student Affairs Awards Night. At the banquet Greek students and chapters were recognized for their outstanding achievements for the 2008-2009 school year.
Award winners recognized at the banquet included:
鈥 New Members of the Year: Drew Register of Kappa Sigma, a sophomore biology major from Monroe; and Abby Barthel of Phi Mu, a freshman pre-nursing major from Monroe.
鈥 President of the Year: Joseph R. Beard of Pi Kappa Alpha, a senior aviation major from Vicksburg, Miss.
Greek Man and Woman of the Year awards recognize those individuals who strive for excellence in the Greek community and beyond. Nominated by their individual chapters, these recipients possess outstanding leadership skills. They have made significant contributions to both the Greek and university communities. They exemplify the ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood or sisterhood.
鈥 Greek Man of the Year: Micah Pulliam of Pi Kappa Alpha, a senior accounting major from Downsville
鈥 Greek Woman of the Year: Elizabeth Fuselier of Alpha Omicron Pi, a junior pharmacy major from Covington
Faculty and Staff Members of the Year awards are based on outstanding contributions in a particular field of endeavor and involvement with the 不良研究所 Greek community.
This year鈥檚 winners are: Roslynn Pogue, Student Employment administrator for the Office of Financial Aid, and Donna Luse, Ph.D., associate dean and graduate coordinator for the College of Business.
The Overall Chapter Excellence Award is the highest honor any Greek chapter at 不良研究所 can receive. The award features a competition in scholarship categories of Service, Alumni Relations, Membership, Campus Involvement, and Chapter Programming. The Chapters within the Panhellenic, Interfraternity and National Pan-Hellenic Councils annually compete for these awards to see who the top chapter within their respected council is. The awards creation is based upon the guidelines used in the Fraternity/Sorority Assessment Project that assesses Greek Systems across the country.
鈥 Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity received the Overall Fraternal Excellence Award, as well as excellence in chapter programs, alumni relations, chapter involvement, and community service.
鈥 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. received the Overall NPHC Chapter Excellence Award, as well as excellence in chapter involvement and alumni relations.
鈥 Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority received the Overall Sorority Excellence Award, as well as excellence in alumni relations and chapter programming.
The following chapters also received recognition for excellence in community service: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and Kappa Delta Sorority; excellence in chapter involvement: Phi Mu Sorority; and excellence in chapter programming: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Keith Hembree, 不良研究所 Greek advisor, stated, 鈥淚t is great to see members and chapters within our Greek System being recognized for all their hard work and dedication to the university. I am very proud of our award winners and congratulate them on an outstanding year.鈥
The Office of Greek Life is charged with advising the 16 nationally recognized fraternities and sororities at 不良研究所. Traditionally, Greek organizations at 不良研究所 are strong contributors to the improvement of the university and the community. Founded on principles of scholarship, leadership, community service and development of lifelong friendships, Greek organizations today still practice these fundamental principles in their pursuit of excellence.
