不良研究所 Wind Ensemble to perform concert Nov. 12
The 不良研究所 Wind Ensemble will present a concert Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium. Dr. Derle R. Long, director of bands, is conductor of the Wind Ensemble. There is no admission charge for this performance.
Long said, 鈥淭he program selected for this performance should have something in it for every fan of band music.鈥
The ensemble will begin with 鈥淲indsprints,鈥 a fast and furious piece composed by Richard Saucedo. The program will include a transcription of Franz Biebl鈥檚 鈥淎ve Maria,鈥 鈥淕andalf鈥 from Johan de Meij鈥檚 鈥淟ord of the Rings,鈥 and the 鈥淜irkpatrick Fanfare鈥 by Andrew Boysen.
The focus of the program centers on three American composers of the middle 20th century: James Clifton Williams, W. Francis McBeth and John Barnes Chance. They are credited with creating a music movement in the United States aimed toward composing original pieces specifically designed for wind bands. Until that point in music history, a large part of the literature that wind bands performed consisted of orchestral transcriptions, marches, and a few original pieces by various composers. The Wind Ensemble will perform Willliams鈥 鈥淐accia and Chorale,鈥 McBeth鈥檚 short symphony 鈥淒ivergents,鈥 and Chance鈥檚 鈥淓legy.鈥
Two marches are included in the program repertoire: Johan Halvorsen鈥檚 鈥淓ntry March of the Boyars鈥 and W. Paris Chambers鈥 鈥淭he Boys of the Old Brigade March.鈥 Dr. Michael Spears will be guest conductor for this program.
