Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society now accepting applications; Mixer on Feb. 13

The Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù is now accepting applications for the 2008-2009 class.

Interested students are encouraged to speak with current members, who will celebrate the 90th anniversary of Mortar Board Inc. by hosting the Mortar Board Mixer Wed., Feb. 13 in the Quad from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Applications and brochures will be available. Also, free refreshments will be provided.

New members are selected on the basis of achievement in scholarship, leadership and service; and serve as active members during their senior year. Candidates are eligible to apply if they are juniors (having at least 60 credit hours by the end of the Spring 2008 semester), have a minimum 3.3 grade point average, and exemplify excellence in leadership and service. Once selected, students serve as active members during their senior year.

Because no more than 50 new members will be selected, only the leaders on campus with the best attitudes toward improvement, who also accept the responsibility and obligation to be an active participant in chapter activities, will be selected.

The deadline to apply is 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22. All eligible students are encouraged to apply and/or recommend other students that have a proven record of creativity, motivation, and integrity.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 223 chartered collegiate and 25 active alumni chapters, with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation.

The Senior Board chapter at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù was founded in 1977 and currently has 30 members. The activities of the chapter during the past semester include the Outstanding Faculty Recognition Ceremony, intended to be an annual event, the Reading is Leading program, and participation at the St. Jude Up ‘Til Dawn letter writing campaign.

Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Lance Armstrong and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
