Middendorf to reflect on modern conservatism April 24

J. William Middendorf will speak on his involvement in the rise of modern conservatism Tuesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. at the Hemphill Airway and Computer Science Building, room 134.

Middendorf was one of a group of five men who “drafted” Barry Goldwater to run for president in 1964 and eventually served as treasurer of that operation. Based on his personal records and his experiences, he recently published a book on the campaign called “A Glorious Disaster.”

He eventually became treasurer of the Republican Party during the Nixon presidency. Middendorf served in the Nixon, Ford and Reagan administrations as secretary of the Navy, ambassador to the Netherlands, U.S. representative to the Organization of American States, and U.S. representative to the European Community. He is a founding member, with William F. Buckley, Jr., of the American Conservative Union and a board member of the Heritage Foundation. He lives in Rhode Island.
