makes a tour stop in Monroe Friday with a performance at 7:30 p.m. at Brown Auditorium at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
For band leaders Jeremy Davis and Clay Johnson it鈥檚 a personal experience.
鈥淭here鈥檚 something very special about being at home. We started 15 years ago in Monroe,鈥 said Davis in a phone interview from the orchestra鈥檚 customized travel bus. They were in Minneapolis, Minn., as part of a tour that鈥檚 crisscrossing the country.
Davis and Johnson are Ouachita Parish boys who grew up performing together.
鈥淲e started in Monroe 15 years ago,鈥 said Davis. 鈥淎s soon as Howard Shaft (their first band), ran its course, actually before it was over, we started Equinox at Sixth Street (bar) with a little jazz trio.鈥
Today鈥檚 Equinox is far from a jazz trio. It鈥檚 a full orchestra with a range of songs and arrangements Davis said has evolved into the band being 鈥渒nown as uniquely Southern. Part of the DNA of the band is Southern and that is what we are.鈥
Equinox started with a Big Band style which Davis said gives them a foundation sound like no other. Take that foundation and mix it with jazz, blues, Texas swing, West Coast swing, rock and roll and even a touch of country and you鈥檝e got a one-of-a-kind experience.
鈥淲e鈥檝e got an amazing selection of difference genres,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e love all kinds of music. For us to do all that music with the orchestra, so far as we know, nobody else is doing it.鈥
