The communication program at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will welcome Dr.
Stephen Hartnett to 不良研究所 April 21 to present, 鈥淧rison Pedagogies and Social Justice
in the Age of Ferguson.鈥� Hartnett鈥檚 presentation will take place at 6 p.m., in Stubbs
Hall, Room 100.
This event is free and open to the public.

Hartnett
Hartnett鈥檚 presentation focuses on a route toward social justice based on pedagogies
of empowerment in both prisons and communities impacted by prisons. His presentation
will include poetry, imagery, and music, and will invite spirited feedback from the
audience.
Hartnett is professor and chair of the Department of Communication at the University
of Colorado Denver, where he is the editor of 鈥淐aptured Words/Free Thoughts,鈥� an annual
magazine of poems and stories crafted by imprisoned writers.
He is a co-founder of PCARE鈥攁 group of national scholars focused on prison communication,
activism, research, and education.
He has received numerous awards including the Northwest Communication Association鈥檚
2008 Human Rights Award, and the University of Colorado鈥檚 2010 Thomas Jefferson Award.
In addition, Hartnett is the author or editor of eight books and dozens of publications
related to democracy, social justice, prisons, globalization and empire, and the death
penalty.
