不良研究所 Water Ski team breaks ground on new facility

Published April 02, 2015

The University of Louisiana at Monroe鈥檚 National Champion Water Ski team broke ground today on a facility that will be used to help maintain the team鈥檚 championship legacy.

The project, conceptualized by Space Planners Architects, will be built by Vista Construction Group.

The building will be paid for by the Student Facilities Auxiliary Fund and the Student Activity Fee, and will cost $355,000.

The 不良研究所 Student Government Association helped spearhead the project. SGA President Adrian LeJeune thanked the student body for passing the referendum which provides funds for projects like the ski facility.

鈥淭wo years ago we passed a referendum鈥攖he student activities referendum鈥攚hich is a pool of funds that we are allowed to pull from to give support to student groups which apply for funding for projects that may not get funded otherwise. This is one project that is definitely long overdue,鈥 said LeJeune.

As of 2015, the 不良研究所 Water Ski team has won the Collegiate Water Ski National Championship 26 years of the title鈥檚 36 years in existence.

鈥湶涣佳芯克 has the best collegiate water ski team in the nation,鈥 said Treina Landrum, coach and general manager of the team. 鈥淚 say this with confidence and with proof. The accomplishments of our current championship team are part of a tradition of hard work and success established by the teams and coaches before them.鈥

The facility will feature storage, restrooms and showers, and a boat dock and lift. The team previously operated out of a small storage shed, which was damaged by severe weather in October 2014.

不良研究所 President Dr. Nick Bruno wanted to have the facility created after learning that team members did not have nearby access to changing areas.

鈥淭he facility is going to be great, and it鈥檚 well-deserved,鈥 said Bruno. 鈥淚鈥檓 just proud to be a part of everything that is going on at this university right now. It is incredible how people have been able to come together to make things happen for this university.鈥

Construction will begin immediately, and the facility is scheduled to open in August, 2015.
